A nurse has won a prize for coming up with an idea to improve hydration for patients.

Jan Vanstone, Hospital Intervention Team (HIT) Nurse at Eastbourne DGH, was the winner of a competition to staff as part of national Nutrition and Hydration Week.

Her idea involved smaller water jugs being introduced to make it easier for elderly and frail patients to use when refilling their glasses. The smaller jugs would also mean the water is refreshed more often.

The competition asked staff for practical ways for nutrition and hydration to be improved for patients in hospital.

It was part of a week focusing on good nutrition and hydration, as well as patient safety.

Lucinda Silva, Lead Dietitian in Nutrition Support, said: “Nutrition and hydration plays a vital role in recovery from illness and operations. That is why the Trust takes nutrition and hydration very seriously and why we are constantly trying to improve ways in which patients can gain good nutritional support.”
