Children's services

We provide acute paediatric (children’s) services at both Conquest Hospital and Eastbourne DGH.

Conquest Hospital

At Conquest Hospital there is a children’s ward (Kipling Ward), a children’s outpatient unit (Kipling Children’s Outpatient Unit) and a Short Stay Paediatric Assessment Unit (SSPAU). There is also a Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). Operations which are suitable for a child to go home the same day and operations which are more complex where a child will need to stay in hospital overnight, are carried out at Conquest Hospital or in a more specialist hospital if necessary.

Kipling Children’s Ward

Kipling Children’s Ward is the main ward for children who need an overnight stay. It has 25 beds. It provides all appropriate care for children who need it.

Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU)

The Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at Conquest Hospital provides support to our obstetric services. Babies born prematurely or with underlying medical conditions will be cared for in the SCBU.

Short Stay Paediatric Assessment Unit (SSPAU)

The Short Stay Paediatric Assessment Unit (SSPAU) is an assessment are for treating children who don’t need to stay overnight in hospital.

Eastbourne DGH

Eastbourne DGH provides urgent care for paediatric cases in the emergency department (ED) and urgent treatment centre, staffed by Advanced Paediatric Nurse Practitioners.

Outpatient appointments are carried out at the Friston Children’s Outpatients Unit. Operations which are suitable for a child to go home the same day are also carried out at Eastbourne DGH. Operations which are more complex, or treatment which requires a child needing to stay in hospital overnight, is undertaken at Conquest Hospital or in a more specialist hospital if necessary.

What do I do if my child is unwell and needs medical help

If you child is unwell you can:

  • Ring your GP
  • Ring NHS 111
  • Get advice from your local Pharmacy
  • Get advice from your Health Visitor
  • In an emergency when your child needs urgent and immediate attention:
    • Ring 999 for an ambulance to take you to the most appropriate hospital
    • Go to your nearest Emergency Department (A&E).
