The NHS was asked to set out a long term plan for the future of the service, setting out ambitions for improvement over the next decade, and plans to meet them over the five years of the funding settlement.
Since then there has been engagement with health and care leaders, staff and clinical experts, patients, the public and a range of other stakeholders to develop policy proposals for inclusion in the plan.
As medicine advances, health needs change and society develops, the NHS has to continually move forward so that in 10 years’ time we have a service fit for the future.
