Diabetes and Endocrinology

The Diabetes and Endocrine department has undergone significant changes at the Conquest Hospital over the last year. The department is undertaking mainly specialist clinics and in reach support to other medical and surgical wards. There are no general medical in patients under the current team.

The department is focused on delivering in reach support to all diabetes and endocrine problems for all the patients in hospital by daily in-reach ward round with the in patient diabetes specialist nurse and more sub speciality clinics.

Clinical Work and Support

The following are clinics currently undertaken at the Conquest Hospital:

Diabetes

  • New and Complex care diabetes clinic
  • Young adults diabetes and transition diabetes clinic
  • Insulin pump clinic
  • Antenatal diabetes clinic
  • Multidisciplinary foot clinic
  • Community clinics

Endocrine

  • General endocrine clinic
  • Combined Thyroid/parathyroid clinic (with ENT Surgeon)

The department has a dedicated endocrine investigation suite managed by the endocrine nurse for all dynamic endocrine tests

Research Opportunities

The department have been participating in some research studies through the diabetes research network and have a part time research nurse to support these activities

Educational Opportunities

The department hold a weekly journal club every Monday lunch time, all the team members take turns to present articles or audits

Monthly local business meetings are also held cross site between Eastbourne DGH and the Conquest Hospital diabetes department

On a Tuesday lunch time a Grand Round is held weekly, with all specialities, including diabetes and endocrinology participating and attending.

Each Wednesday lunchtime an endocrine meeting is held to discuss dynamic endocrine test results and interesting endocrine cases in the presence of all the team members and consultant biochemist

Local Endocrine MDT’S include:

  • Adrenal MDT (Thursday lunchtime alternate weeks) with both the Conquest Hospital and Eastbourne DGH endocrinologist, Radiologist and ENT surgeon in attendance
  • Parathyroid MDT (Friday lunchtime) where the Conquest Hospital and Eastbourne DGH endocrinologist, Radiologist and ENT surgeon in attendance

Participation in the following regional MDT’S via video link is also undertaken:

  • Sussex Thyroid cancer MDT (Wednesday morning)
  • Sussex Pituitary MDT (Thursday lunchtime on alternate weeks)

Diabetes Education Programmes

The programmes include:

  • SADIE (Nationally accredited locally type 1 education programme)
  • ESTHER (Local type 2 Diabetes education programme)
  • Insulin pump education programme
  • Carbohydrate awareness education

Endocrine education programmes

  • Emergency steroid injection education
  • Sick day steroid management

Teaching/training

Core trainees are expected to attend various speciality clinics during their posting and also in reach ward rounds, to manage the patients admitted with diabetes and endocrine problems. The Conquest Hospital has a dedicated core medical trainee teaching programme
