Geriatrics
The new geriatric training programme for the Department of Medicine for the Elderly (DME) at East Sussex Healthcare Trust has been restructured, with the primary aim of producing high quality Geriatricians with the necessary skills and broad based knowledge required to practice as Consultants in the UK
Clinical Work and Support
You will be supported during your 4 month rotation in Geriatrics by a dedicated consultant geriatrician, your programme lead, an allocated educational supervisor and clinical supervisors. All of whom will give you regular constructive feedback on your progress and what you can do to improve.
This will better enable you to deliver core competencies from the geriatric medicine curriculum and you will also benefit from increased exposure to community medicine
Trainee progress is reviewed via Eportfolio, requiring the trainee to complete set modules by way of:
- Observation
- Direct supervision
- Independent practice
- Attendance at relevant training courses and events
The individual trainee completes their individual EPortfolio which is monitored by the department in collaboration with our excellent medical education team, to ensure you continue to meet your training objectives and achieve the best outcome
‘During my time in DME, I have welcomed the opportunity of attending weekly multi-disciplinary team meetings in the department, specifically focussed on complex care and discharge planning. This joined up working is to the benefit of our patients in helping us to deliver safe and effective care and has provided me with a sound knowledge to draw upon during my working day’ Lucy Shinwell, FY1 Trainee

‘As a Geriatric Medicine Trainee, I have had good quality training from the excellent role model Geriatricians at ESHT. There is plenty of opportunity for General Internal Medicine exposure and onsite specialist intervention with a variety of cases seen during oncall shifts, in the context of a supported environment. I will definitely come back here again’
