Neurology

Brighton and Sussex University Hospital (BSUH) carries out a training programme for Higher Speciality Trainees in Neurology. Part of this involves spending one day per week (normally Mondays) at the Conquest Hospital under the supervision of Dr Muhammad Chowdhury, Consultant Neurologist and Educational Supervisor for BSUH Neurology trainees. The morning is spent seeing patients in a general neurology clinic, where the trainee will gain exposure to a wide range of common neurological conditions, including primary headaches, epilepsy, tremor, cognitive impairment, blackouts, sensory disturbance, weakness etc. Some patients will be urgent referrals, so there will be exposure to patients who may be presenting for the first time with conditions like Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Peripheral Neuropathy etc

In the afternoon, the trainee will undertake a ward referral session, seeing in-patients with acute presentations such as, Gillain Barre Syndrome, Cerebral Haemorrhage, Myasthenic Crisis, ITU Neurology, Acute Confusional State, Cord Compression, MS Relapse, Central Nervous System malignancy, uncontrolled seizures etc. This is done under supervision. For more experienced trainees, there is the opportunity to work semi-autonomously

There is also a monthly Migraine Clinic where treatment with Botulinum Toxin is administered and the trainee will have the opportunity to observe and learn this technique.
