Three new doctors have joined ESHT’s Emergency Departments following a successful recuitment opportunity in India, by one of our senior consultants.

Mr Utham R Shanker, Consultant in Emergency Medicine was visiting India to conduct the Royal College of Emergency Medicine exams, and at the same time managed to recruit the trio. Mr Shanker said: “It is well documented there is national shortage of doctors to work in emergency medicine. Trying to recruit this finite resource is an immense challenge and we have to be innovative in our recruitment. I went to India recently to conduct the Royal College of Emergency Medicine exams and during the trip managed to recruit the three doctors who had already done the exams. They were keen to work and pursue their career in emergency medicine in the UK. Following an interview and all the relevant checks we were able to offer them a position in our emergency departments and increase our medical establishment.”
The three new doctors are in post. Dr Hubert James has started at Conquest Hospital and Dr Divya Subramaniam and Dr Janani Raveendran have started working at Eastbourne DGH.
Dr Janani Raveendran said: “The Trust has provided us with excellent opportunities for higher training. The Emergency department staff have been extremely welcoming, helping to us to settle in and feel at home. The department has good consultants and senior nurses who support us and provide good patient care. All three of us feel we are looked after very well and look forward to working for East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. We would encourage our junior’s doctors back in India to consider the UK not only for training but also to enjoy the beauty of the South Coast. It is too early to say the UK is home away from home but we are sure it will feel that way very soon.”
