Orthopaedic consultant Professor Scarlett McNally, has been awarded Honorary Membership of the Faculty of Public Health.
This is in recognition of her national work improving the population’s health. Professor McNally has worked with many national organisations on how to increase exercise in the population and writen a major report “Exercise the miracle cure” for the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges.
She has also worked on reducing pollution, increasing active travel, reducing bullying and valuing every member of staff, using ‘bite-sized’ education and ‘perioperative care’ so when patients have operations, they can prepare well with good pathways to halve complications.
Professor McNally now works part-time at the trust and along with teaching, leadership, writing and speaking roles. She contributes a regular column in the British Medical Journal regarding how to improve health and is an Honorary Clinical Professor at Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
After receiving the award Professor McNally said: “I am delighted to have this work recognised. Health is about more than just operations, tests and medication. About half ill-health is preventable. Exercise reduces the risk of many conditions by about 30% and can halve complications of surgery. Humans need social connection and to be part of something. I have enjoyed working with multiple organisations over decades to work out how organisations and cultures can change. Everybody should get the most out of their unique and special life. This means organisations should support all people to be active, connect and value each other.”
