Professor Scarlett McNally, one of our orthopaedic consultant surgeons, has been named in Cycling UK’s #100WomenInCycling 2024.
Professor McNally was nominated because of her work championing active travel and policies to reduce ill health, road traffic injuries and pollution. She also writes articles in the British Medical Journal and has been on a number of health committees. The citation also shares that with a serious illness, Scarlett used an electric bike to regain fitness for a stem cell transplant. Professor Scarlett McNally now works part-time at the Trust and travels to conferences by electric bike and train.
Cycling UK’s #100WomenInCycling 2024 highlights the 100 exceptional women who promote cycling and encourage others to take part. It celebrates inspirational women who are leading by example in this wonderful and life-enhancing activity. Women from all walks of life and every corner of the cycling world have been nominated, from mountain bikers and endurance cyclists to community group leaders, cycling school-run mums and industry entrepreneurs.
The initiative was set up because at every age group, women cycle less than men. In general their needs are different, so practicalities need to change to allow more women to get the benefits of cycling. Scarlett would love to see more people, of any gender cycling to work!
