Hero of the Month – Leah Falla and Kayleigh Clark

March’s Heroes of the Month were Leah Falla and Kayleigh Clark who work in the Maternity department at Conquest Hospital.

“Leah visited a family with a three-week-old baby for a final check on the mother as she was on the incentive scheme for stop smoking and had successfully quit. Leah went to do the visit as normal and confirm the final quit when she identified an abnormally high carbon monoxide (CO) reading. Leah acted very quickly in asking her colleague Kayleigh Clark for support and they contacted the ambulance service and fire brigade.

“The mother and five children, including the newborn baby, were bought to Conquest emergency department for medical assessment. The investigations by the fire brigade led to the boiler being condemned. Social Services were able to support the family and they returned home later that day.

“We just want to thank Leah and Kayleigh not only for supporting the family through their  Tobacco Dependency Advisor roles, which helped the mother to quit smoking, but also in their initiative. Leah was able to recognise that the family were unwell and that their symptoms aligned with carbon monoxide poison. By her and Kayleigh’s actions in calling the emergency services ensured the family were safe, thoroughly assessed medically and able to return home when the outcome could have been far more serious.”

Well done to Leah and Kayleigh in their handling of the situation and congratulations on being awarded the trust’s Hero of the Month award.
