Our cardiac team have hosted the very first Complex Devices Support Group at Hastings welcoming over 70 patients, their families and carers for an afternoon of learning, connection, and support.

The event began with an update from Prof Nikhil Patel, Cardiology Lead, on the Cardiology Transformation programme and what these changes will mean for local patients. Attendees also received an overview of complex cardiac devices (ICD/CRT), from Dr Katarzyna Dickinson, followed by an open question and answer session where patients and families could put their questions directly to the experts.
The remainder of the day focused on sharing experiences and building community, with time for patients to connect with each other and the cardiac team. A range of stalls added extra value, featuring device manufacturers and local charities offering resources and advice.

Jacqueline Hunt, Heart Failure and Devices Specialist Nurse said: “We were delighted to have held the first complex device support group at Hastings. These meetings are a great opportunity for patients and clinicians to meet in an informal setting to explore and understand the needs of ICD/CRT patients. Clinicians joined in the group discussions which ranged from questions regarding medications, to more specific in-depth questions about the actual ICD/CRT devices.
“The greatest benefit from the support group meetings is creating an environment where patients feel they can discuss issues at ease, with not only the clinicians who attend but also other patients, as their shared experience is invaluable. we know from experience with our Eastbourne Complex devices support group this has led patients to go on and create their own regular support meetings.”

Catarina Oliveira, Cardiac Nurse Practitioner who helped organise the event said: “We are extremely proud of what we were able to provide for our patients. The room hire for the support group was fully funded through the generosity of colleagues who donated during a charitable breakfast organised by the Cardiology team.
“Additionally, I would like to thank cardiology colleagues for their help in organising the support group with a special thank you to Elizabeth Miah and Natasha Mawani. This included compiling a list of patients with complex devices in the Hastings area, handwriting invitation cards, liaising with device manufacturers for support, and arranging refreshments for attendees.”
This first session marks an important step in creating a supportive network for those living with complex cardiac devices in the Hastings area, and the team look forward to many more opportunities to come together. A cardiac support group has also be taking place at Eastbourne for the last 12 years.
The next event is planned for March 2026.
