Meningitis outbreak: risk to Sussex residents very low

You may have seen recent reports about a meningococcal disease (meningitis) outbreak in Kent. The strain behind cases in Kent has now been identified as Meningitis B (known as MenB).

Please be aware that the outbreak is currently contained only in Kent, despite some social media commentary regarding cases in Sussex and other areas.

The risk to Sussex residents is very low, however it is still important to be aware of symptoms and know when to seek help. Visit nhs.uk for information on the symptoms of meningitis and what to do if you are concerned.

We are asking all patients, and accompanying family/carers, sent to our emergency department via NHS 111 with suspected meningitis, to please ensure they wear a mask while in the hospital.
