ASK Campaign: Supporting the Armed Forces community at the point of care

We’re proud to support the national rollout of the ASK Campaign across NHS trusts in England, led by the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA).

The campaign encourages NHS teams to ask patients a simple question:

“Have you, or an immediate family member, ever served in the UK Armed Forces?”

This question helps the NHS recognise members of the Armed Forces community, including veterans, reservists, and their families, so they can receive the understanding, care, and support they may be entitled to.

Military service can affect health in different ways, both physical and mental. By asking this question and recording it in a patient’s health record, NHS teams can:

  • Better understand a patient’s background and experiences
  • Offer more personalised care
  • Connect patients and families with specialist support services where appropriate

Answering the question is always voluntary, and information is handled sensitively and confidentially.

The short video below explains why this question is important and how it helps the NHS provide better care for members of the Armed Forces community and their families.
