The Sussex Surgical Centre hosted two highly successful hernia training lists on Saturday, the first of their kind within the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery, and open to trainees from across the UK. Four trainees took part, travelling from London, Sevenoaks and Sussex to join the programme.

Shameen Jaunoo, consultant upper GI surgeon, said: “Today showed exactly why dedicated training lists matter. With the right cases, close supervision and a supportive theatre team, trainees can build real confidence and skill while patients receive excellent care. The enthusiasm in the room was fantastic. Everyone was learning, everyone was contributing and the whole day ran smoothly.”
Each list included four carefully selected cases, chosen specifically for their suitability as high‑quality training opportunities. All procedures were carried out by the trainees themselves, working under direct, one‑to‑one supervision to ensure a safe, supportive learning environment.

The feedback from the day was excellent. One trainee told us, “I was able to improve my operative skills with consultant advice and learn new techniques. These lists would be perfect for trainees if they became available on a regular basis.” Another added, “Thanks for organising these training lists; it was a fantastic learning opportunity.”
Most importantly, every patient had a smooth experience and was discharged home the same day – a testament to the professionalism of the teams involved and the strength of this training model.
These lists mark an exciting step forward for the SSC, showcasing our commitment to high‑quality training, excellent patient care and a culture of shared learning.
