Patients with suspected stroke are set to benefit from faster, more advanced diagnosis following the introduction of CT perfusion imaging.
The new technology provides detailed information about blood flow in the brain, helping clinicians identify patients who could benefit from specialist stroke treatments, even many hours after symptoms first began. By showing which areas of the brain may still be saved, CT perfusion supports quicker and more informed treatment decisions, improving the chances of recovery and reducing long-term disability.
Rebecca Ayling, Cross Site Clinical Modality Manager said: “The successful completion of the Trust’s first CT perfusion scan marks a major milestone in the development of stroke services across East Sussex. The enhanced imaging capability will help stroke teams identify patients who may benefit from life-changing procedures such as mechanical thrombectomy, alongside existing clot-busting treatments.
“The achievement follows extensive planning and collaboration between radiographers, radiologists, stroke physicians, specialist stroke nurses and GE Healthcare.
“The introduction of CT perfusion strengthens the Trust’s nationally recognised stroke pathway and reflects its ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality, evidence-based care closer to home. As the service develops, more patients across East Sussex are expected to benefit from rapid access to specialist stroke assessment and treatment.”
