The Tobacco Dependence Treatment Team would like to thank everyone who joined us for our recent Fresh Air and Wellbeing Days at Conquest Hospital and Eastbourne District General Hospital.

Tobacco Dependence Treatment Team
The events were held to celebrate the benefits of our smokefree hospital sites and to encourage colleagues to take a moment away from the demands of the working day to recharge, reconnect and enjoy some time outdoors.

It was fantastic to see so many staff members visiting the courtyards, taking a wellbeing break and learning more about the support available for patients who smoke during their hospital stay. Throughout the events, the team had valuable conversations about the challenges of nicotine withdrawal in hospital and the important role we all play in ensuring patients receive compassionate, evidence-based support during their care.
One of the highlights of the events was the Ward Screening Rates Challenge, where staff were invited to guess current screening rates across wards. Winning participants, received a Costa voucher for submitting the closest guesses.

Alongside raising awareness of tobacco dependence treatment services, the events also offered an opportunity to reflect on the importance of staff wellbeing. Taking a meaningful break away from desks, wards and clinical areas can have a positive impact on both physical and mental health. Whether it was enjoying a few quiet moments outdoors, catching up with colleagues or simply taking a deep breath of fresh air, it was encouraging to see staff making the most of the space.
Following the positive feedback received, both James Ward Courtyard at Conquest Hospital and Cherry Tree Courtyard at Eastbourne DGH remains open as a dedicated outdoor space for staff to use during their breaks. The recently enhanced and newly planted area offers a peaceful environment to step away from the workplace, even for just a few minutes.

The Fresh Air and Wellbeing Days highlighted the strong connection between a healthy environment, staff wellbeing and excellent patient care. By supporting patients with tobacco dependence and encouraging colleagues to prioritise their own wellbeing, we can continue to build a healthier culture across East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust.
Fresh air, a short break and a few moments to recharge can make all the difference.
