Throughout July, colleagues across East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust came together to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month 2026, embracing this year’s theme, “Unity in Diversity.”
Led by the Trust’s Multicultural Staff Network, a month-long programme of activities provided opportunities for staff to celebrate culture, share experiences, reflect on identity and belonging, and recognise the significant contributions South Asian communities make to the NHS and wider society.
The celebrations began with a virtual launch event, where colleagues explored themes of culture, heritage, inclusion and the shared values that bring people together. Throughout the month, staff shared personal stories, career journeys and experiences of working in the NHS, offering valuable insights into the traditions, communities and experiences that have shaped their lives.
A series of dedicated sessions focused on Careers and Contributions and Reflection and Wellbeing, highlighting leadership, resilience, community connections and the wisdom passed through generations. The sessions encouraged open conversations about culture and identity while creating opportunities for colleagues to learn from one another.
The highlight of the month was a vibrant South Asian Heritage Month celebration event, which brought colleagues together through food, culture, conversation and connection. Staff from across the Trust attended and experienced colourful displays of traditional clothing, cultural artefacts and heritage information, as well as music and henna art demonstrations that showcased the richness and diversity of South Asian cultures.
Food played an important role in the celebrations. Visitors enjoyed a range of traditional South Asian dishes and sweets, creating opportunities to share stories, discover new flavours and celebrate cultural heritage together. The Multicultural Staff Network also partnered with the Trust’s Restaurants at Conquest Hospital and Eastbourne DGH, where colleagues’ treasured family recipes featured on menus throughout the month, allowing even more staff to take part in the celebrations.
South Asian Heritage Month provided an important opportunity to recognise the lasting contribution South Asian communities continue to make to the NHS and to East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. The celebrations also highlighted the importance of creating an inclusive workplace where everyone feels respected, valued and able to bring their whole selves to work.

The events reflected the Trusts values of Kindness, Inclusion and Integrity, demonstrating the positive impact of bringing people together through culture, food and shared experiences.
