We are delighted that our Care Without Carbon programme, in partnership with Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust, has been recognised in the ‘Toward Net Zero’ category in this years’ HSJ awards. The CWC team are now invited to present to a panel of HSJ judges on 8 October.
The programme is our approach to delivering sustainable healthcare, as set out in our recently refreshed Green Plan. This HSJ award entry highlights the value of working across the system, we have long partnered with the CWC team to develop and deliver our Green Plan.
We are making steady progress towards our Net Zero Carbon goal, measuring from a baseline of emissions in 2019/20 we have already reduced them by 14%. With lots of innovations in progress we are on track to continue bringing down the carbon pollution from our care. Since our first Green Plan in 2021, the Trust has made significant progress in reducing emissions and embedding sustainability across services. This includes removing desflurane from practice, decommissioning nitrous oxide manifold systems, introducing anaesthetic gas capture technology, and investing in low-carbon infrastructure such as upgrades at Eastbourne District General Hospital. Changes we make that will benefit our environment benefit our patients first and foremost because this is at the heart of what we do always.
