Nerve blocks for upper limb surgery

What is a nerve block?
A nerve block is usually carried out by your anaesthetist or sometimes by your surgeon. It is when local anaesthetic is injected around specific nerves. It makes the part of your body
supplied by those same nerves go numb and block the sensation of pain. This technique provides effective pain relief during and after surgery and in some cases may permit the surgery
to be carried out without also needing to receive a general anaesthetic.
