Professional profile

Paul Kirkland is a Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon for East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, working at both the Conquest and Eastbourne District General Hospitals since 2005. He qualified at St Thomas’s Hospital Medical School, London in 1989 and completed his specialist ENT training in London where he was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.

Paul completed further specialist training in Head and Neck surgery at the Royal Marsden Hospital, and advanced training in Thyroid and Parathyroid surgery at the Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospitals in London. He was awarded a fellowship by the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery, working in two centres of excellence in Amsterdam and in Stuttgart.

He was the ENT clinical lead at East Sussex NHS Trust from 2013 to 2018. He is a member of the Sussex Thyroid and East Sussex Parathyroid multidisciplinary teams. He was awarded Clinical Excellence Awards (CEA’s) in 2008, 2011 and 2015.

Whilst he treats all ENT conditions affecting adults and children, he specialises in the treatment of the sinuses, thyroid, parathyroid and skin lesions of the face and neck.

Paul offers minimally invasive and endoscopic surgical techniques in his surgery, as they shorten the post-operative recovery time and reduce the time spent in hospital e.g. Balloon Sinuplasty, Eustachian Tube Balloon Dilation and minimally invasive Parathyroidectomy.

He performs around 150 thyroid and parathyroid operations each year. He enters his thyroid and parathyroid surgical outcome data into the national online database which can be viewed by the public at: www.baets.org.uk
