Blood transfusions

Iron transfusions

Supportive therapies

Central line placement and management

We are open from 8am to 6pm – Monday to Friday (closed Bank holidays)

Booking your first appointment

After seeing your consultant, a referral to our unit will be made and you will be asked to book your pre-treatment blood tests. We then ask that you contact the unit three days after this to be given your appointment dates.

Consent

You will have discussed your treatment with your consultant and have signed a consent form – please can you bring this with you for your first treatment. Prior to starting your treatment, you will have time to discuss any concerns you have with the nurse caring for you – please feel free to ask anything.

Side effects

If you feel unwell or have a raised temperature (above 38) at home, please contact us immediately on 0300 131 4807 (24 hour number) – at night our phones are diverted to Pevensey ward which is a 24/7 ward, so nurses are always available.

Please also use this number if you have any side effects you would like to discuss.

We ask that you complete a side effect form prior to each treatment, and bring it with you when you attend for bloods. If you have your bloods taken by our phlebotomy team, please can you bring the side effect form to the unit on that day.

If you have bloods taken at your GP surgery, or at home with a District nurse, we will ring you 1-2 days prior to your treatment to discuss this form.

This is so that we can order your treatment in advance, and minimise delays – please be honest with any side effects so that we can make any changes in advance – no changes can be made on the day of treatment.

Food and drink

Hot and cold drinks are available throughout the day, which you can help yourself to. A light lunch consisting of sandwiches etc. is available to patients only.

Please feel free to bring in alternatives with you. It is important you eat and drink as usual whilst having treatment.

Delays

Please be aware that due to the nature of our work, there may sometimes be delays which will lengthen your stay in our department – we will endeavour to keep these to a minimum and apologise in advance.

Free car parking

Patients receiving active Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) are entitled to a free parking permit which your nurse will give you.

This can be used at both Eastbourne District General Hospital and Conquest Hospital.
