The Trust is staging a five day awareness event, promoting the message of insulin safety as part of a national campaign to help reduce incidents of insulin errors, during Insulin Safety Week.
Two in five people with diabetes on insulin (40 per cent) experience an error related to the administration of the drug while in hospital, according to the results from the latest NHS Digital National Diabetes Inpatient Audit for England and Wales.
Erwin Castro, Diabetes Nurse Consultant said: “The incidence of insulin related errors is very concerning nationally. At ESHT, the Diabetes Team are working tirelessly to ensure that we avoid, if not reduce these errors from happening by launching innovative practice and providing education to staff about insulin safety. Insulin Safety Week is an amazing platform to reinforce all the information we provide to our staff colleagues to improve the care we provide for patients with diabetes.”
The ESHT Diabetes Team are also holding a number of events, drop-in sessions with interactive games and fun learning opportunities and a poster competition during the week.
