Tribute to Michael Winchester

Members of Staff at the Trust are mourning the death of Michael Winchester a Housekeeping Supervisor and ‘popular, well respected and kind’ colleague who sadly passed away after being diagnosed with Covid-19.

Michael had worked at Eastbourne District General Hospital for over 16 years. He joined the Trust in January 2005 as a Rapid Response cleaner and developed his career within the team and was promoted to Housekeeping Team leader in 2011.

Tributes have been paid by many of his colleagues with Michael being described as one of the nicest and kindest gentlemen that you could ever meet.

Joe Chadwick-Bell, Chief Executive Officer said: “The news of Michael’s death saddened us all, but it is especially difficult for his team who knew him as a bubbly, outgoing and caring member of the department. Our sincerest thoughts are with Michael’s loved ones at this sad time.”

Amanda Howell, Facilities Manager said: “The Housekeeping team at Eastbourne DGH are like a family and are devastated to have lost Michael. He was loved and respected by all. He was always calm, kind and caring and extremely supportive of his team. He was our gentle giant and a true gentleman.”

Michael’s wife Monica, wanted to pay tribute to the staff at Eastbourne District General Hospital’s Critical Care Unit who cared for him. She said: “We are all overwhelmed with grief at the loss of our Michael to Covid-19. Michael was loved by so many, he will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He was a gentle soul and so very caring to NHS colleagues.”

The Trust’s Chaplaincy and Health and Wellbeing teams are working with Michael’s colleagues to help them with any support they may need during this sad time. A book of condolence has been opened at the Eastbourne DGH Chapel.
