Net Zero Carbon

In 2020 we set out on a journey to develop the first renewably heated hospital in the country.

Working with the Carbon and Energy Fund, the trust applied for £28million of Salix Public Sector Decarbonisation Fund money to deliver a landmark project for the NHS at Eastbourne District General Hospital.

The net zero carbon project was divided into three components and has seen the following:

Insulated fascia installed

A completely new insulated fascia has been installed on the hospital, plus the installation of new double-glazed windows and roof insulation to improve the thermal efficiency of the building.

Air source heat pumps

We have replaced our steam heating system with a 4.8MWth multi-stage heat pump system, which provides renewable heat to the building.

Solar photovoltaic array

We have installed a 1.1MWp solar photovoltaic array over the one of our car parks, which is providing clean electricity.

Work began in 2022 and was completed in 2024. These improvements to the hospital have reduced our heating requirements and allowed for the system to be upgraded so it is powered by cleaner renewable energy, which has reduced our use of fossil fuels, and reduced our carbon footprint.

Highlights of the net zero carbon project

5,000 square metres of new fascia

2,000 square metres of double glazing

17,000 square metres of Bauder Roof Insulation

4.8MWth heat pump (3.6MWth N+1)

80 degree Celcius heat pump flow temperature

Emergency backup diesel generators

1.1MWp Solar PV Carpark System

1,000,000kWh power output per year

Overall this will save 4,100 tonnes of carbon per annum.
