Children’s Services (Paediatrics)

East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust provides paediatric services at both Conquest Hospital and Eastbourne DGH.

Conquest Hospital

At Conquest Hospital there is a children’s ward (Kipling Ward), a children’s outpatient unit (Kipling Children’s Outpatient Unit) and a Short Stay Paediatric Assessment Unit (SSPAU). There is also a Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). Operations which are suitable for a child to go home the same day and operations which are more complex where a child will need to stay in hospital overnight, are carried out at Conquest Hospital or in a more specialist hospital if necessary.

Kipling Children’s Ward

Kipling Children’s Ward is the main ward for children who need an overnight stay. It has 25 beds. It provides all appropriate care for children who need it.

Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU)

The Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at Conquest Hospital provides support to our obstetric services. Babies born prematurely or with underlying medical conditions will be cared for in the SCBU.

Eastbourne DGH

At Eastbourne DGH there is a Short Stay Paediatric Assessment Unit (SSPAU) and an outpatient unit (Friston Children’s Outpatients Unit). Operations which are suitable for a child to go home the same day are also carried out at Eastbourne DGH. Operations which are more complex where a child will need to stay in hospital overnight, are carried out at Conquest Hospital or in a more specialist hospital if necessary.

Short Stay Paediatric Assessment Unit (SSPAU)

Our Short Stay Paediatric Assessment Units (SSPAU) are assessment units for treating children who don’t need to stay overnight in hospital. They are on both sites, however if a child at Eastbourne DGH SSPAU needs an overnight stay, they will be transferred to the Kipling Ward at Conquest Hospital or other appropriate hospital.
