Travel Advice for Patients and Visitors Attending Conquest Hospital
Planned gas network upgrade works are being undertaken by Southern Gas Networks (SGN) along The Ridge (B2093) outside Conquest Hospital.
The programme is expected to run in phases between September 2026 and August 2028, with some phases taking place on routes commonly used to access Conquest Hospital. During certain phases of the project, traffic congestion, delays and temporary changes to usual travel routes are expected, particularly as works move closer to the hospital.
To help minimise disruption, we encourage everyone travelling to or from the hospital to:
- Allow extra time for their journey.
- Check local traffic updates before travelling.
- Consider alternative routes where practical.
- Plan ahead for appointments, clinics, meetings or visiting times.
- Inform the department you are attending if you expect to be significantly delayed.
- Consider car sharing, public transport or active travel where appropriate.
We are working closely with SGN and partner organisations to understand and minimise the impact of the works while maintaining access to hospital services. Due to the works, there may be increased vehicle movements within the hospital grounds.
To support operational resilience throughout the programme, the rear access gate to Conquest Hospital will remain unlocked for colleagues and emergency vehicle use.
For everyone’s safety, please:
- Use designated pedestrian pathways where available.
- Take extra care when crossing roads and vehicle routes.
- Remain alert to vehicle movements, including emergency vehicles.
- Follow any signage and instructions provided on site.
As traffic volumes may increase, all site users are reminded to park considerately and only in designated parking areas.
Roadways, footpaths, emergency access routes and junction sightlines must remain clear at all times. We will be undertaking additional monitoring, patrols and enforcement activity throughout the works to help ensure safe access for patients, visitors, colleagues and emergency services.
Colleagues arranging appointments are encouraged to remind patients and visitors to allow additional travel time when attending the hospital, particularly during periods of significant traffic management.
We are working closely with SGN and partner agencies to ensure appropriate arrangements are in place to protect:
- Emergency vehicle access.
- Patient access to hospital services.
- Staff travel arrangements.
- Deliveries and essential services.
At present, all hospital services continue to operate as normal. Further information, including details of individual phases and any changes to access arrangements, will be shared as it becomes available.
