Chaplaincy, religion and spiritual care

Being admitted to hospital can be a challenging experience for many people, touching on emotions that you may not be used to encountering.

Our chaplaincy team can help patients, relatives and staff address issues which may or may not be of a religious nature, including supporting you if you would like:

  • help with understanding your experience in hospital
  • someone to talk to in confidence about anything which is bothering you
  • religious support , including guidance, prayer, Holy Communion or religious literature etc
  • pastoral care from someone who is caring, compassionate and kind
  • emotional support and time with someone who has a listening ear
  • to talk through life-threatening or ethical issues.

We are committed to respecting diversity in culture and religion. We have Christian chapels, multi-faith rooms, quiet rooms and chaplaincy offices on each site.

Our chaplaincy team is made up of ordained and lay members of staff and volunteers. In delivering spiritual care, the ethos of our chaplaincy team is to:

  • offer companionship on the journey
  • ensure the unquestioning acceptance of every individual concerned
  • provide a caring, listening ear
  • treat everybody with dignity and respect, in total confidentiality
  • be non-judgemental
  • provide religious, spiritual and pastoral care to patients, relatives, carers, and staff regardless of age, gender, sexuality, race, colour, physical ability, or belief.

Our chaplaincy also advises colleagues on the effect religion and spirituality can have on medical, dietary and palliative care requirements.
